Case study · Boys 200m Freestyle

3:42.66 → 3:07. Thirty-five seconds, one session a week.

How a young club swimmer broke his PB at the very next meet, then kept dropping time at every race through 2026.

The starting point

On 2 May 2026, a parent messaged Coach Jina. Their son needed 3:35.88 in the 200m freestyle to upgrade at his club. His PB was 3:42.66, and he had just swum 3:45.30 at an SSPA test. His next meet was in under two weeks.

The plan

  • Once-a-week stroke correction, over about 5–6 months
  • Fine-tuning the gaps he was unaware of, which a busy club coach had no time to catch
  • Continued daily training with his club coach
  • Mindset: no pressure targets, just “keep working on the small details”

“His progress didn’t come from me. It came from his determination to make a difference, and his club coach working on his daily training. All I did weekly was fine-tune the missing gaps.”

Next target: under 3:03. As the parent put it after the 3:07, “See how in Nov.”

What his parent says

“He has managed to shave an incredible 40 seconds off his 200m freestyle time in just five months… Coach Jina has an exceptional eye for technique and is able to identify small details in a swimmer’s stroke that can make a significant difference.”
